Project at a glance
- Product: USB storage device housing
- Components: 3 – top, bottom and end cap
- Processes: mould design and building, injection moulding, painting, assembly
The brief
The customer, a technology start-up, needed a compact housing that would protect the electronics, close with a precise snap fit and look good on a key ring. The original plan was opaque moulded parts with a painted finish.
What we did
We designed and built moulds for the three components so that they fit without visible steps or gaps. During sampling our engineers suggested a translucent material, which shows the electronics inside and removes a painting step. After colour trials the customer chose a lightly translucent finish for production, and fully transparent versions were sampled for a later edition.
Takeaway
Discussing material and finish while the mould is still being designed often saves a process step – and can make a better-looking product. Talk to us about injection moulding and finishing for your next consumer product.
The product shown is a customer’s proprietary design and is not for sale.
