Printing on Plastic Mouldings: Pad Printing, Screen Printing and Hot Stamping FAQs

Automotive Instrument Panel

Decoration is carried out in-house next to our moulding lines, so printed parts do not leave the factory between processes.

Which printing methods do you offer?

Pad printing, silk screen printing, hot stamping (hot foil) and laser marking. We also offer in-mould decoration and painting – see surface finishing.

Which method is right for my part?

Pad printing is the most flexible: it prints on curved and recessed surfaces and handles fine detail and several colours. Screen printing gives a thicker, very opaque ink layer on flat or cylindrical surfaces. Hot stamping applies metallic or coloured foil quickly with no drying time, but usually one colour per pass. Laser marking is permanent and needs no consumables, which suits serial numbers and codes.

Can you print on a curved surface?

Yes – pad printing is designed for it. Hot stamping on curves is possible with shaped tooling.

What artwork do you need?

Vector files (AI, EPS or PDF with outlined text), one file per colour, plus a drawing showing size, position and Pantone colours on the part.

Should the logo be printed or moulded in?

A logo engraved in the mould costs nothing per part and never wears off, but it is the same colour as the part. Printing adds colour and contrast and can be changed without modifying the mould.

How do you make sure the print lasts?

We select inks for the specific resin, use surface treatment such as flame or plasma where needed, and test adhesion with cross-hatch tape tests and, on request, abrasion or solvent rub tests.
